Magnesium chloride is one of the basic materials for forming the hardened body of magnesia cement. It is divided into MgCl2·nH2O and anhydrous magnesium chloride according to the number of crystal waters.

Light-burned powder and magnesium chloride must be mixed evenly to react and form a phase structure such as 5Mg(OH)2·MgCl2·8H2O or 3Mg(OH)2·MgCl2·8H2O, thereby giving the product strength and various excellent properties. The main sources of magnesium chloride hexahydrate are: (1) underground brine or seawater that is concentrated and crystallized to form marine magnesium chloride, namely brine flakes; (2) brine granules formed by natural evaporation of brine after potassium extraction from salt lakes; (3) magnesium chloride is generated by the reaction of light-burned powder and waste hydrochloric acid, and then evaporated and crystallized to form brine flakes after sedimentation.
